Research Guides, also called LibGuides, are curated guides to the subscription and free resources around a specific discipline, course, topic or research tool.

Instructors can embed Research Guides, in part or in their entirety, in their courses in Canvas.

Embedding Research Guides, step by step

  1. Navigate to the Module where you want to embed the Research Guide, and click the + sign.

  2. In the pop-up window, select External Tool from the Add drop-down menu. Screenshot showing the External Tool option highlighted
  3. Select "LibGuides"

  4. In new pop-up window, select the guide option (Full, Single Page or Content Box) from Content Type drop-down menu. In this example, we are showing how to embed an entire guide, but it is also possible to embed a single page or content box.

  5. . Locate the Guide you want to embed using the search box or drop-down menu.

  6. Choose your preferred landing page for the guide. "Home" is usually the guide's front page, but you can select any pages.

  7. Click Embed Content and then Add Item.
  8. You can now activate the content by clicking the null icon.

All the links in the guide will open in a new browser tab (or window), so your students won't be taken away from the course when they interact with the guide.
