UNM students, faculty and staff can authorize someone over 18 to pick up and check out library books on their behalf, either as an authorized user for Interlibrary Loan items, or a proxy borrower for UNM items.

For ILL books, you can add an authorized user in your ILLiad account by clicking the "Profile" menu button and selecting "Update Profile". From there, scroll down to the "User Information" section and enter the person's name in the "Authorized User" field. You can view our policies for authorized users here.

For non-ILL books, you can authorize one proxy borrower to your UNM University Libraries account. You can view our policies for proxy borrowers here.

The authorizing borrower can initiate this request two ways:

1. Let us know you want to add a proxy borrower via Ask A Librarian! We can complete the process online if you can send proof of ID for both parties.

2. Go to a main campus library service desk with your proxy borrower

  • Complete a Proxy Authorization Form (found at the bottom of this FAQ)
  • Present your current Lobo Card
  • Proxy borrower presents their photo ID
  • Proxy receives a Proxy Borrower Card

For check out: the proxy must present the Proxy Borrower Card and their own photo ID.

Note: Proxy Borrower Cards are good for one year. Adding authorized user and proxy borrowers are separate procedures, and adding an individual as one does not grant them the status of the other.
